Abstract
The Compton profiles of magnesium single crystals have been measured with scattering vectors perpendicular to the planes (0001), (1010) and (1120) using 60 keV radiation from a 241Am source. The anisotropy in the electron momentum distribution was found to be very small. This is in agreement with a recent band-structure calculation and with positron annihilation experiments but in disagreement with an earlier X-ray Compton profile measurement. A polycrystalline sample of Mg has also been measured and the experimental result for the valence electron contribution has been compared with the earlier experiments and with the theoretical models available. Keywords
