Abstract
Aristotle's first major literary effort, the Gryllus, is not perchance a « memorial » honoring Gryllus, the son of Xenophon. It is primarily concerned with the nature and function of rhetoric. Defending Plato's notion of rhetoric it is motivated by the many obsequious eulogies of Gryllus. It is also an attack upon the rhetoric advocated and practiced by Isocrates.Chroust Anton-Hermann.
