Taking Stock: Renewing Our Research Agenda on the Causes and Consequences of Dropping Out

Abstract
Gary Natriello, Aaron M. Pallas, and Edward L. McDill provide an assessment of the findings and suggestions presented in this special issue on school dropouts and outline an agenda for the next steps in research on the problem. They argue that a comprehensive program of research should include data on student characteristics, school processes, the act of dropping out, and the economic and cognitive consequences of the failure of large numbers of students to complete high school.
