Abstract
Tschesche obtained from scymnol, a substance isolated from the bile of the hag fish, a triketo-monocarbonic acid with 24 carbon atoms. This acid appeared to be an isomer of dehydrocholic acid but differed in its melting point. From this triketo acid a diketo acid was obtained which was identified as 7.12 diketocholanic acid. Since a similar acid was obtained by Wieland from dehydrocholic acid this establishes the relationship of scymnol to this bile salt. The molecular configuration of scymnol is discussed and its structural formula is depicted.
