Abstract
Nursing home personnel care for debilitated elderly. Yet their attitudes have been inappropriately measured with scales based on negative stereotypes and inaccurate knowledge about the aged in the general population. Attitudes, therefore, are reconceptualized from attitudes toward older people to attitudes toward behavior essential to the care of nursing home patients. The sociocultural environment of nursing homes is recognized as the determiner of attitudes, and it is argued that with reconceptualized measures of attitudes, quality of care can be predicted.
