Benign neoplasms of the extrahepatic bile ducts or the papilla of Vater are an infrequent cause of biliary obstruction. Asymptomatic benign tumors of the papilla of Vater are encountered more frequently. Baggenstoss,2 in 1938, reported 25 cases of asymptomatic polyps of the major duodenal papilla that were found as incidental lesions during routine necropsy at the Mayo Clinic. He found 4 asymptomatic polyps of the papilla of Vater in a series of 100 routine necropsies. We have found reports of only 15 cases of symptomatic, surgically treated, benign tumors of the extrahepatic bile ducts or the papilla of Vater in the literature. The initiation of this study resulted from encountering a patient who had a symptomatic polyp of the papilla of Vater that was removed surgically. Review of Literature One of the first extensive studies of benign tumors of the bile ducts was made by Rolleston and McNee,11
