Abstract
This chapter provides the results to date of an ongoing research project, analyzing the dynamics of operating units in the industrial system and particularly the influence of large enterprises on regional development in the Republic of Korea. Korea has experienced rapid economic growth and industrialization during the last three decades, generally related to a high growth of manufacturing. Export-orientated industrialization has been the major industrial strategy since the late 1960s. The sectoral and spatial industrial policies and a rapid economic growth, however, resulted in bipolar concentration of population and economic activities in the Seoul and Pusan metropolitan areas. Over-concentration of population and economic activities in Seoul is now an urgent issue in view of both economic efficiency and equity. The chapter examines the dynamics of plant location of the groups; the separated plants are classified according to the year of establishment. Decisions on investments and plant location are very important ones which should be made at the group headquarters.
