Abstract
[Lithium and diuretics may interact adversely, leading to diuretic-induced lithium retention, an increase in the serum lithium level, and possible lithium intoxication.] In normal volunteers whose conditions were stabilized with lithium carbonate, there were no significant changes in serum Li levels during a 2-wk period with 40 mg/day of furosemide. During another 2 wk period, 50 mg/day of hydrochlorothiazide caused a significant rise in serum Li levels. A substantial amount of Li may be reabsorbed in the loop of Henle and the combined use of Li and a loop diuretic may not require modification of the Li dosage. This publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
