Abstract
The early favorable reports1on the use of the new synthetic orally administered anticoagulant dicumarol2have led me, during recent months, to a trial of the drug in 18 cases at the Lenox Hill Hospital. Opinions drawn from the use of any drug in such a small series are necessarily of limited value, but I feel that a report of the observations may be of some assistance in the evaluation of a drug which has variously been branded as useless or as excessively dangerous in effective dosage3and, on the other hand, as of great value in the prevention of pulmonary embolism.4 SELECTION OF PATIENTS Of the 18 patients treated, the largest group, 9, were suffering from clinically evident thrombophlebitis of the lower extremities. Five patients received prophylactic doses of dicumarol, following operation or delivery, because of a history of previous episodes of thrombosis or embolism. Keywords
