EFFECT OF SORBED WATER ON THE DEATH RATE OF WASHED SERRATIA MARCESCENS

Abstract
This species dies at a maximum rate when in the presence of only a small amount of sorbed water, about 1/8 of the normal intracellular water. The logarithmic death rate is about 4.5 hour-1 at 33% water concentration, but is negligible below 15% and above 70%. Several possible explanations are discussed.
