Abstract
The main triterpenoids of Fomes officinalis are eburicoic acid and dehydroe–buricoic acid. Many species of Polyporaceae produce large amounts of eburicoic acid and related triterpenes when cultivated on synthetic media. Therefore the possibilities to use these fungal metabolites as starting material for the synthesis of corticosteroids were investigated. The results reported indicate that further investigations in this direction may be promising.
