Abstract
Utilization of the nitrous oxide technique to measure cerebral blood flow and metabolism in 7 patients with uremia revealed that cerebral blood flow was above normal in 5 of the patients, probably due to their severe anemia. There was a consistent and large reduction in cerebral O2 and glucose consumption, and this alteration in metabolism is thought to be due to the anemia and extensive chemical disturbances which occur in uremia. No correlation was observed between measured cerebral metabolism and alteration in mental status or non-protein nitrogen level.
