THE DIFFUSIBILITY OF UREA ACROSS THE SHEEP PLACENTA IN THE LAST 2 MONTHS OF GESTATION

Abstract
The rate at which urea crosses the placenta from the maternal to the fetal blood after its injection in the maternal circulation has been measured in twenty‐four sheep (fetal age range: 81–136 days). At a given age the rate of crossing appears to be proportional to the transplacental difference in concentration. The proportionality coefficient between rate of crossing and transplacental difference in concentration increases steadily during the last 2 months of gestation and is linearly related to the fetal weight.
