Abstract
In the summer of 1921 I had a letter from Dr Frank Springer of the United States Museum, Washington, in which, referring to the occurrence of Mespilocrinus and other crinoid genera in Fife, he suggested it would be well to make up tables to show the stratigraphic distribution of the different species. He added something might come of this, or again we might find one of those hopeless mingling of forms which upset our previously definite ideas of succession. Acting on this suggestion, I have tried to get together all the known records of Scottish Carboniferous crinoids, and propose to give them in the following paper, as well as to place on record a few additional forms which I have found in recent years. In working out the published lists, not the least of the difficulties one has to contend with is the unsatisfactory state of the nomenclature dealing with the Scottish crinoids, and the fact that some of the species require revision and others have to be described and named. Until this is remedied, work of this kind will always be laborious and imperfect. I am greatly indebted to Mr D. Tait, through whose kind offices I have been able to consult books not otherwise available. Some few works I have been able to purchase, but this has often meant a great loss of time. I am also indebted to Dr Bather, who has at various times sent me papers dealing with this interesting group of fossils, and similarlyKeywords
