Abstract
After the description of idiopathic hypercalcemia of infancy in 1951-1952,1-3many cases were reported in Great Britain up to 1957, with a decline in incidence after modification of the vitamin D intake in that year.4The disease was differentiated into benign and severe forms,5with recognition of gradations between these extremes.6,7Sporadic cases of idiopathic hypercalcemia have appeared in the United States as well and have included both patients with marked increases in the vitamin D activity of the serum8,9and patients without this abnormality.10,11Since the etiology of this disease has not been completely delineated, it is possible that a number of different pathogenic mechanisms can account for this syndrome. Hypercalcemia in infants given excessive vitamin D has been well documented and has also been observed as a concomitant of interstitial plasma-cell pneumonia12and as a familial disease.13Other causes ofKeywords
