The Effect of X-Irradiation on the Conjugation of Steroids by Mouse Liver and Kidney

Abstract
In vitro conjugation of compound X-4C14 (pregnane-3[alpha]-ol-ll,20-dione) as a glucuronide by the kidney was significantly decreased 1, 5, 13, and 21 days after 500 r of whole-body X-irradiation. Irradiation significantly decreased (P< 0.01) the in vitro conjugation of compound X by the liver on days 5 and 21. The decrease in conjugation on the 1st postirradiation day was nonsignificant, and the decrease on the 13th day has a P value range of (0.05 < P< 0.1). This decrease in conjugation was reflected in the amount of steroid released by [beta]-glucuronidase hydrolysis. The in vitro conjugation of corticosterone (4-pregnen-11[beta], 21-diol-3,20-dione) by the liver was significantly decreased only on the 21st day after 500 r. There was no significant decrease in conjugation of corticosterone by the liver on days 1, 5, or 13 postirradiation. The amount of corticosterone glucuronide formed by the liver on days 5, 13, and 21 postirradiation was significantly decreased.
