Abstract
General conditions and apparatus for applying coatings of the refractory metals, carbides, nitrides, borides, silicides, and oxides by vapor‐phase deposition are described. This process consists essentially of reducing, reacting, or decomposing a volatile compound of the coating material at a heated surface. Thick, adherent deposits have been obtained on a variety of bases, both metallic and nonmetallic. A few of the properties of the deposits are described, along with their limitations and potential uses as protective coatings for high‐temperature service. Keywords
