Effect of the heating rate used during stress relief annealing on the magnetic properties of amorphous alloys

Abstract
The effect of the heating rate used during stress relief annealing of amorphous alloy toroids on the final soft magnetic properties has been investigated by comparing three different annealing techniques. Batch furnace annealing of a completely formed toroid provides the slowest heating rate and the poorest properties. The hot block method tested in this study, provides a faster heating rate but only a small improvement in properties. This technique involves annealing the ribbon layer by layer as it is wound, the heat being applied by passing the ribbon over a hot block whose radius of curvature is the same as that of the final toroid. A similar annealing technique in which the hot block is replaced by a quartz line heater, provides the fastest heating rate and a significant improvement in properties.
