Abstract
It is apparently the belief of many surgeons and internists that post-operative complications may be lessened or prevented by the preoperative administration of digitalis, even to patients whose hearts are apparently normal.1The present investigation was undertaken in an attempt to determine the influence of digitalis on certain objective factors during and after surgical operation, but, as no similar study has been found in previous reports, it seemed necessary to establish first a control group of nondigitalized patients for subsequent comparison with a similar group of patients who had received digitalis. It is the nondigitalized group which forms the basis for the present report; the influence of digitalis is discussed in the following paper.
