Abstract
The genesis of the present AOAC official first action method for isolation and enumeration of Staphylococcus is reviewed and information is supplied to support recommendations for revision of the method. It is recommended that the present method be revised by deleting instructions for preparation and use of Vogel and Johnson agar and substituting instructions for preparation and use of Baird-Parker medium. It is also recommended that a direct plating method be provided as an alternative method and that the required collaborative study of the alternative method be conducted. The recommendations have been accepted by the Association.
