XPS analysis of PbTe surfaces prepared by various cleaning procedures

Abstract
The effect of several chemical and physical treatments for PbTe(100) surface cleaning was investigated by XPS. Etching with a (NH4OH+H2O2) solution shows a remarkable contrast to etching with acid, the first one being suitable to eliminate carbon contamination. The combination of the (NH4OH+H2O2) etching, heating and light Ar+ sputtering was the best treatment to prepare clean stoichiometric PbTe surfaces free of carbon and oxygen contamination, which are necessary for epitaxial growth on these surfaces.
