Abstract
In Brief The most significant innovation in diabetes management during the past 20 years has been the acceptance and application of the empowerment approach to diabetes education and treatment. This method acknowledges the way in which behavioral changes occur by casting patients as the central figures in the design and implementation of their diabetes care plans. The many scientific and technological developments that have been made during this same period have strengthened patients' ability to pursue effective self-management programs under this approach. Keywords
