Abstract
We have established a rapid high performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) technique for preparatively separating hydrocarbon samples boiling above 519°F (270°C) into four compound classes: paraffins, aromatics, polar nonhydrocarbon compounds and hexane insolubles. High purity fractions are thus obtained for further identification by other analytical techniques. Normally, 250 mg samples are separated; however, one can separate larger amounts by scaling up the chromatographic system. When the technique is applied to synthetic hydrocarbons (coal liquids, shale oils, etc.), a fraction of the polar compounds are not recovered. Keywords
