The technical reliability of superimposition on cranial base and mandibular structures

Abstract
This paper evaluates the technical reliability of cephalometric superimposition. The procedure superimposes tracings of natural reference structures in the anterior cranial base and mandible, as described by Björk and Skieller (1983), on to radiographs taken at a younger age. Two sets of data, including 120 replicates for 20 boys at three ages, were evaluated. The findings demonstrate that superimposition on structures in the anterior cranial base is more reliable and requires less training than mandibular superimposition. The vertical orientations of the posterior structures, for both the anterior cranial base and mandible, show the greatest technical error. Based on the observed levels of technical reliability, superimposition on natural reference structures must be considered as an accurate and effective methodology for longitudinal cephalometric research.
