Abstract
To the Editor: Many ambulatory patients with heart disease are receiving oral furosemide and digoxin. These are often prescribed as Lasix (Hoechst), 40-mg tablets, and Lanoxin (Burroughs Well-come), 0.25-mg tablets, respectively. Unfortunately, these two formulations are almost identical in appearance. The are both round, white, scored tablets about 7 mm in diameter. This similarity can cause some patients to confuse the two medications, with severe results, as I believe happened in the following two cases.A 78-year-old woman with a history of mild congestive heart failure and atrial fibrillation was taking Lanoxin, 0.25 mg, and Lasix, 40 mg, daily..
