Commitment, attraction, and conformity.

Abstract
This experiment was designed to test 2 hypotheses: (a) when Ss are not committed to continue in a group, there is a monotonic relationship between attraction to the group and conformity to group norms; the less S is attracted, the less he will conform; (b) when Ss are committed to continue as a member of a group, there is a nonmonotonic relationship between attraction and conformity. The less S is attracted, the less he will conform down to a crucial point in attraction. Beyond this point decreased attraction will result in increased conformity. Both hypotheses were confirmed. In addition it was ascertained that the low attraction, committed Ss, after conforming, subsequently increased their attraction to the group.
