Results of Intermittent Treatment of Growth Hormone Deficiency with Human Growth Hormone

Abstract
The growth in stature of 2 groups of growth hormone [GH] deficient children was compared. The 1st group received intermittent treatment with human (h)GH, 1 yr on, 1 yr off, subsequent years on; the 2nd group received continuous treatment. This latter group had a significantly better mean growth response. The reduction in treatment velocity in years subsequent to the 1st was not prevented by the year off treatment, the mean velocity of the intermittent group in their 3rd yr being the same as that of the continuous group in their 2nd. Intermittent hGH therapy is of less value than continuous treatment and should be avoided, at least pending further evidence.
