Lung Cancer: To Operate or Not?1–3

Abstract
Rarely is it immediately clear whether a patient should or should not undergo a thoracotomy for suspected lung cancer. Yet, some investigators have implied that a simple, blanket decision can be made. The basis for a rational approach to the patient with lung cancer [staging] is discussed. Methods of evaluation of the cancer and whether or not it can be removed are reviewed. To operate or not? It is contended that only rarely can one answer with a simple "yes" or "no". Usually the answer is "maybe, if." This review was a commentary on the "if.".
