Abstract
Electron energy loss spectra (EELS) have been obtained on SmCo5 and Nd2Fe14B film samples for losses in the range from 0 to 80 eV. The SmCo5 samples investigated were sputtered samples that exhibited in the film plane static energy products of 15–20 MG Oe and coercivities in the 15–25 kOe range. The Nd2Fe14B samples were also sputtered films with coercivities of 15 kOe. The EELS spectra were obtained by using a 200‐eV primary electron beam and then energy analyzing the backscattered electrons with a cylindrical mirror analyzer. Transition‐metal (TM 3p‐3d) and rare‐earth (RE 5s‐4f, RE 5p‐5d, and RE 4f‐5d) transitions were readily observed. It was also observed that the Sm 4f electrons in SmCo5 were more localized than the Nd 4f electrons in Nd2Fe14B from the RE 5s‐4f transition which was consistent with the observed superior anisotropy field in the SmCo5 lattice. In contrast, the Fe in Nd2Fe14B was indicated to be more localized than the Co in SmCo5 as deduced from the TM 3p‐3d transitions which suggested a weaker d electron polarization cloud in Nd2Fe14B and thus leading to a lower Curie temperature than SmCo5.This publication has 6 references indexed in Scilit:
