Cat-scratch encephalopathy

Abstract
Case report. A 32-year-old physicist developed headache, anorexia, diarrhea, and fatigue shortly after being scratched on his forearm by two pet kittens. Ten days later, he developed tender adenopathy in his right axilla. While hiking in the Azores 12 days later, he developed generalized tonic-clonic status epilepticus lasting 2 hours and was treated with intravenous diazepam with prompt resolution of seizures. Postictal agitation, combativeness, disorientation, and coma lasted 48 hours. WBC was 27,000 with left shift, lumbar puncture yielded clear CSF with 14 WBCs (100% polymorphonuclear cells), and negative Gram's stain, bacterial antigens, and India ink preparation.
