Thermal Fluctuations in Slow $^{4}He$ Quenches Inhibit Vortex Production
Abstract
We continue to examine the Zurek scenario for the production of vortices in condensed matter systems in the light of recent experiments in quenches of liquid $^{4}He$. We argue that short wavelength thermal fluctuations make vortices poorly defined until after the transition has occurred, interfering with our ability to make unambiguous observations of their density. Further, should they appear, it is plausible that that they will decay faster than anticipated hitherto.
