THE CONDITIONED REFLEX TREATMENT OF CHRONIC ALCOHOLISM. X. AN ANALYSIS OF 3125 ADMISSIONS OVER A PERIOD OF TEN AND A HALF YEARS

Abstract
2323 known cases from the above admissions are analyzed. No formal therapy except conditioning was given. 85% had remained abstinent for 6 months; 70% for 1 yr.; 60% for 2 yrs.; 55% for 3 yrs.; 40% for 4 yrs.; 30% for 7 yrs.; 25% for 10.5 yrs. The factors of sex, age, religion, marital status, occupation, financial status, residence, police record, nervousness, physical deformity, physical deficiency, delirium tremens, length of drinking history, history of previous abstinence, source of referral, type of liquor consumed, local legislation in patients'' home State, membership in abstinence clubs, group therapy, military service; cooperation and others were investigated to determine their effect on prognosis. The avg. period of abstinence in those relapsing was 11.2 months. It is believed that about 30% of the patients should have received psychotherapy in addition to conditioning.Keywords
