Abstract
Note from Dr. Merle A. Sande — The majority of individuals who develop AIDS will experience at least one episode of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia during the course of their illness. If projections are correct, >150 000 cases of P. carinii pneumonia can be expected within the next three to four years, an increase making this one of the most common types of serious pneumonias in the United States. Therefore, it is important for infectious disease clinicians to be aware of the various clinical and laboratory presentations of this infection. We have asked Dr. Philip C. Hopewell to discuss the subtleties of presentation of P. carinii pneumonia and the usefulness of various diagnostic approaches. Dr. Hopewell, having seen >300 patients with Pneumocystis pneumonia at San Francisco General Hospital, has had a great deal of clinical experience in this area, and he has been instrumental in developing guidelines for a rational diagnostic approach. Keywords
