Abstract

Using a retarding potential energy analyzer the appearance potential of doubly charged benzene ions formed by field ionization was found to be 14.0 ± 0.3 eV. This appearance potential supplies evidence for the desorption of C₆H₆ ⁺⁺ions in a chainlike structure from the surface of the field anode.
