Abstract
The effect of Li on the human immune system is unknown. Lymphocyte responses to mitogens and the ability to produce lymphokines were studied in 4 patients before and during Li therapy for manic-depressive illness or cluster migraine. With time, Li increased lymphocyte responses to mitogens (PHA [phytohemagglutinin] and PWM [pokeweed mitogen]) and lymphokine production was altered from migration stimulation factor to migration inhibition factor. Although the exact mechanism is unknown, it is suggested that Li has an effect on the suppressor cell system. This publication has 19 references indexed in Scilit:
