Abstract
The α-soft resins of eighteen varieties of hops have been examined by a counter-current distribution technique and the presence in them of cohumulone, first discovered by F. L. Rigby & J. L. Bethune (J. Amer. chem. Soc., 1952, 74, 6118), has been demonstrated. Comparison of calculated distribution patterns with those obtained experimentally permits an approximate estimation to be made of the percentage of cohumulone in each variety. In the majority of cases cohumulone comprises less than 10% of the α-soft resin, but in both Brewer's Gold and Bullion hops the proportion is 30–40%.Keywords
