Abstract
Since a study at the Seattle Public Health Service Hospital indicated that 60 percent of outpatients were unaware of special precautions to he followed when taking certain medications, a project was initiated to make them aware of their proper administration. A master list was used to indicate the proper precaution to he issued both verbally and in written form by the pharmacist when dispensing the medication(s). Since certain precautions apply to several drugs, the appropriate drug was checked off from a list of medications covered under a single precaution. A followup study indicated an increase of about 45 percent in the number of patients who are now aware of special precautions to be followed when taking their medications. Since proper therapeutic response is dependent, in part, on proper administration of a drug, benefit is certain to be derived by the patient who knows how to properly take a drug, is aware of other agents that may enhance or antagonize the effects of his medication, and is aware of important side effects that may impair his performance or alarm him needlessly.
