Abstract
The relationship between the local-mode and the normal-mode treatments of X-H stretchings is analysed by expressing the hamiltonian in terms of boson operators and transforming the operators rather than the basis functions. The transformation is exact, non-perturbative, and solves in a general form the open problem of the mathematical link between the two theories. Keywords
