Leucocytic Infiltration in the Placenta and Membranes

Abstract
Investigations were made to compare leucocytic infiltrations of the placenta and membranes with inflammatory symptoms of fetuses and newborns, time of amnion rupture and temperature of the parturient woman. Leucocytic infiltrations were accepted as the criterion of infection in the placenta and membranes. They occurred in 306 cases. The most frequent localizations of these infiltrations are the fetal membranes (93.1%) and the chorionic plate (80%). Comparative investigations of leucocytic infiltrations of the placenta and membranes with infectious symptoms in newborns showed their co-existence in 43.8% and with intrauterine pneumonia confirmed by autopsy in 100% (47% cases). A distinct dependence was confirmed of leucocytic infiltration occurrence on the time of amnion rupture (over 24 hours - 98%). This dependence and frequent localization of infiltrations in fetal membranes (93%) seems to infer infection of the ovum by contact with the lower part of the reproductive canal.
