Abstract
Spectra of the 3600–4700 Å region of the spectrum of the carbon star V Hya reveal a rich emission-line spectrum similar to those found in objects where shock waves occur. A radial velocity of |$-155 \,\text{km} \,\text{s}^{-1}$| relative to the star indicates that we see the nearer lobe of the bipolar jet already known in V Hya. The unusually strong violet continuum and the absorption in the higher Balmer lines, which yield a radial velocity slightly different from that of the carbon star, may arise in the hypothetical companion. Keywords
