Abstract
Intrinsic ductile versus brittle response of ideal crystals containing cracks is theoretically analyzed using a modified Kelly‐Tyson‐Cottrell approach. A new criterion based on the three‐axial ideal tensile strength and the normal‐stress dependence of ideal shear stress is proposed. A great variety of possible crack/slip configurations is evaluated by means of computer in order to estimate the intrinsic response of f.c.c., b.c.c., h.c.p., and diamond crystals. The result of this crystal‐calibration is, in general, in a good agreement with available experimental data. Keywords
