THE INFLUENCE OF VITAMIN A UPON UREA AND INULIN CLEARANCE IN THE DOG

Abstract
The addition of butter, cod liver oil, halibut liver oil and carotene solns. to various diets was found to markedly increase urea clearance in dogs. Lard, cottonseed oil, wheat germ oil and irradiated ergosterol were ineffective in elevating urea clearance. Large doses of vit. A were found to increase urea clearance in dogs whose diet presumably contained sufficient vit. A. Vit. A deficiency as produced in 12 young and 3 adult dogs resulted in urea clearances about 65% of normal. In such animals, diuresis was more difficult to initiate and maintain. Adm. of vit. A in daily doses varying from 10,000 to 50,000 units increased urea clearance 25 to 60% above the normal. Vit. A affected renal clearance by changing the vol. of glomerular filtration, inasmuch as the urea clearance, inulin clearance ratio was not appreciably changed when the clearances rose from the avitaminosis A level to that of excess vit. A adm. When the clearances were elevated the excretion of Hb indicated that the elevation of clearance was not due to increased glomerular permeability. Detns. of Hb, pulse rate and mean arterial blood pressure indicated that changes in these values were not responsible for the change in clearance.
