Abstract
Synopsis: The sedimentology of the sandstones is used, together with the available stratigraphic information, to demonstrate the changes in depositional environment which take place in the Tweed Basin during Lower Carboniferous times. The characters of the sandstones of the Cementstone Group indicate deposition in a dominantly fluvial environment, the Fell Sandstone is interpreted as a thick widespread shallow marine deposit and the sandstones of the Scremerston Coal Group are mainly of fluvial origin. An attempt is made to fit these observations into a regional palaeogeographic pattern.
