EFFECT OF VITAMIN B 12 DERIVATIVES ON OXIDATION AND VITAMIN UPTAKE BY ESCHERICHIA COLI

Abstract
Vitamin Bl2a, benzimidazole, 2,5-dimethylbenzimidazole, 5-6-dimethylbenzimidazole, and a-ribazole were tested for vitamin B12-like stimulation of the acetate oxidation system of a mutant strain of E. coli requiring vitamin B12 for growth. Only vitamin B12a was found to exhibit such activity. When these compounds were tested for the ability to prevent vitamin B12 stimulation, only 5,6-dimethylbenzimidazole was effective as an inhibitor. This compound interfered with the uptake of radioactive vitamin B12 by cells grown with the vitamin, but did not affect the uptake by cells grown with methionine.Keywords
