Abstract
Operating characteristics of the hollow cathode discharge have been investigated qualitatively. A sample of less than 10 μgm. of an element may be used to study the hyperfine structure of the principal lines in an exposure of a few hours. The useful lifetime of the sample in the discharge is about 10 hr., and up to 80% of the sample can be recovered after use. Keywords
