Abstract
Joint fluid and blood serum concentrations of ampicillin and kanamycin were measured in patients with traumatic joint effusions. The joint fluid concentrations of ampicillin averaged 1.80 μg per milliliter approximately 2 hours after the last 500 mg. oral dose. Joint fluid concentrations of kanamycin averaged 16 μg per milliliter within 2 hours after the last dose of 15 mg. per kilogram of body weight. At 2 hours, levels of both antibiotics were approximately the same in joint fluid and blood serum. No correlation could be made between patient's age or appearance of synOVial fluid and antibiotic levels. There was an in!;erse relationship between ampicillin joint fluid levels and patient weight. Joint fluid concentrations of the antibiotics were adequate for inhibiting or killing many common pathogens of infected joints. Keywords
