The Changing Role of the Deputy Headteacher in English Secondary Schools

Abstract
High‐school deputy headteachers in an authority employing four per school were surveyed, with follow‐up interviews. The main issues studied were the use and value of job‐descriptions, in relation to the separation of responsibilities among deputies, and the extent of role‐conflict. The changing role of the deputy headteacher after comprehensive reorganisation in relation to Burnham's view of dual‐leadership was examined. With the introduction of multiple deputy‐headships it would seem that it is the deputies who are assuming task‐instrumental responsibilities for the organisation of the school.
