Abstract
The essay explores the relationships between race and gender in the study of communication, with major emphasis on analyzing the ways in which feminist theory and research have dealt with non‐white women. An overview of contemporary feminism's problems in dealing with race and pluralism among women is provided, and several options are presented for how to attend to diversity within the study of women's communication. The essay concludes with the proposal to feature culture as the central concept for the study of women's communication.
