The paper deals with the functional and geographical organization of the semiconductor industry in South-East Asia. The discussion opens with a broad description of the growth of US-owned assembly plants in the region. This is followed by an account of the current geographical distribution in South-East Asia of: (1) US-owned assembly plants; (2) locally-owned diffusion facilities; and (3) locally-owned subcontract assembly houses. The internal functional characteristics of assembly plants are examined. It is then shown that there is an emerging international division of labour in the semiconductor industry within South-East Asia. The growth of localized semiconductor production complexes is analysed. The theory of the new international division of labour is briefly reconsidered in the light of all this. SCOTT A. J. Eröffnet wird die Diskussion mit einer umfassenden Beschreibung der Zunahme von Montagebetrieben in der Region, die sich in amerikani-schem Besitz befinden. Dem folgt eine Darstellung der gegewärtigen geographischen Verbreitung in Südostasien von: (1) Montagebetrieben in amerikanischem Besitz; (2) Diffusionsanlagen in örtlichen Besitz; und (3) Montagewerkstätten im örtlichen Besitz, die Nebenkontrakte ausfuhren. Die internen Funktionsmermale von Montagek-betrieben werden untersucht. Sodann wird gezeigt, dass innerhalb Südostasiens eine internationale Arbeitsteilung in der Halbleiterindustrie sichtbar wird. Das Wachstum örtlich begrenzter Halbleiterproduktionskomplexe wird analy-siert. Die Theorie der neuen internationalen Arbeitsteilung wird im Lichte dieser Befunde kurz überprüft.
