Pneumocystis carinii Pneumonia: Therapy and Prophylaxis

Abstract
Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia is by far the most common infectious complication of human immunodeficiency virus infection, and therapy for this disease has been extremely difficult because the toxic side effects of standard therapy are astoundingly high. However, new experimental therapies appear to be very promising, and prophylaxis appears to work. We have asked Dr. Joseph A. Kovacs and Dr. Henry Masur to comment on these topics. Both Dr. Kovacs and Dr. Masur are highly visible and productive clinical and laboratory investigators in the field of opportunistic infections.
